EFI HOLDEN HJ PROJECT

NKA Parts  EFI 304 HJ PROJECT

We are refitting this HJ 308 with a VR 304 EFI with a  T700 (4l60e) as well fitting a full internal WB body wiring loom as this will up date to WB style switchs and fit aircon, this is not going to be a show car it will be a daily driver. This job started as just a rebuild on auto trans but as the  person that  owns it is a friend we were bench racing & we came up with the refit as he said he could get a hold of a VR304 cheap. We already had a WB ute that was smashed up and the HJ with with no trans and so started this story.  As this will need a rewire I will go through what we have done as this looks hard but it's not . First the HJ we removed the old 308 & trans then started on removing the gts dash then the wiring, we rebuilt the front end with new GMH bushs, new ball joints etc. fitted crossdrilled discs and Girlock callipers and aircon that was off the WB. Then we removed the VR 304 mottor & trans, all the wiring & relays that we needed  as this refit is all easier if you have the complete car as you have a parts bin, then we started to fit the motor & T700 (4l60e) into the HJ.

We fitted HQ engine mounts to the motor (commodore ones will set the motor to far back) as well as change  the sump to a HQ one as the commodore one as it will not fit  then  we fitted  the motor  then  the T700 trans was fitted a Std crossmember was used as we modifed it as all you need to do is weld a plate of steel to the bottom of it as well as cut a piece out as seen in the photos . This is how a  STD T350 is made by GMH as you can see it in the photo . Then I sent the tailshaft off to be cut down as it is  to long to fit.  It can be used as is once it has been done as the trimatic yoke will fit the T700.

Fuel tank was next, we cut open a VR  fuel tank to remove the swirl pot, pickup & fuel pump so we could use it to fit into the HJ ute tank. then we cut a hole in the top of  the HJ fuel tank so we could work on the inside of it. This is a  dangerous job it should be done by a professional as if you don't get all of the fuel vapour it will blow up when you cut or weld it.  We used tin snips to cut them open just to be safe then we fitted the parts to the HJ tank

made the bracket up for the relays & fuses as we are going to use the VR ones then fit the WB loom to these as I am making it all go through the factory firewall hole. All the wiring loom then will be on the driver's side  as there is more room under the dash to fit all the wires. I stripped the VR engine loom down so it could be cut shorter and made to fit the driver's side. This job took the most time to do but it is now done.

So now we have the HJ with the VR304 EFI motor & trans. Now that was the easy part, now to make it drive!!!!!
